LA’s late strike stuns Houston

-

CARSON, California (AP): LOS ANGELES’ (LA) Alan Gordon headed home the winning goal in stoppage time to give the Galaxy a 1-0 victory over Houston on Friday, ending a five-game winless slump in Major League Soccer.

Gordon’s soft touch with the header caught goalkeeper Tyler Deric flat-footed 90 seconds into stoppage time. The perfect feed came from Robbie Keane.

The Galaxy had the better of possession for much of the first half, but Houston came closest to a goal in the 43rd minute when a well-worked free kick gave Mika Vayrynen a shot in space at the top of the box, but his attempt sailed just high.

Keane came on as a sub for LA early in the second and made an immediate impact. He found Gyaso Zardes for a pointblank attempt, but Deric was able to snuff it.

Gordon came on for

the Galaxy in the 68th minute and, on his first touch, had a quality opportunity in score off Stefan Ishizaki’s precision cross, but Houston defender David Horst went to the ground to block the shot.

COLUMBUS 2 – CHICAGO 2

Chicago’s Jason Johnson scored in the fourth minute of stoppage time to snatch a 2-2 draw at Columbus.

Eric Gehrig sent a cross into the box, where Johnson was able to head it past Steve Clark.

Kei Kamara opened the scoring for Columbus in the eighth minute, tapping home Ethan Finlay’s pass at the top of the 6-yard box for his eighth goal of the season. Kamara scored again in the 55th minute with a header off a feed from Kevan George.

David Accam halved the lead just three minutes later, heading in a cross from short range by Kennedy Igboananike.
