Don’t flap against gay love, marriage

THE EDITOR, Sir: IRELAND MADE global news on the weekend when that country became the first to vote in favour of gay marriage through a national referendum. The results: a resounding yes to support gay marriage, with more than 60 per cent voter turnout, and more than 60 per cent voting in favour of.

The vote was an intelligent one, impacted by increased awareness, and, in particular, the impact from the younger generation who are i ncreasingly showing that they are not at all uptight on these issues.

The significance is even more profound for modern Ireland, considering the perception of it as a traditional conservative and Catholic country.

Marriage is a personal choice. Some do it; some don’t. Some work; some don’t. But if two people love each other enough to form a union, I see no reason why they should be denied the right to legalise that union and protect it. A referendum shouldn’t even be necessary to decide human-rights issues.

Although Jamaica is nowhere ready culturally, and otherwise for gay marriage, we need to wake up! The world around us is fast changing and many of these same countries are our close friends and trading partners supporting our industries.
