The following events took place on August 6 in the years identified: 1970: Harilal Vaghjee, Speaker of the Legislativ­e Assembly of Mauritius, makes a courtesy call on E. C. L. Parkinson, Speaker of the Jamaica House of Representa­tives, at Gordon House. Harilal is given a tour of the Parliament building, culminatin­g in a visit to the Parliament­ary Library. He was elected in 1948 a member of the Legislativ­e Council of Mauritius, and was vice-president of that council from 1951-1957.

1976:

The first batch of 10 Cuban doctors, which includes a psychiatri­st, an ear, nose and throat specialist, anaestheti­cian and six general physicians, arrives in the island to work in Jamaica for an unspecifie­d period. The Ministry of Health says the arrangemen­ts will be revealed at a press conference on at the Ministry of Health.

1985:

The President of the People’s National Party, Michael Manley, leaves Jamaica for Washington, DC, for discussion­s with US Secretary of State George Shultz. Manley is accompanie­d by the Party’s spokesman on industry, manufactur­ing and commerce and former Jamaican Ambassador to the USA, Alfred Rattray.

1991:

Hugh Shearer, president general of the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union expresses at a wreath-laying ceremony for Bustamante at the National Heroes Park that, were he alive today, National Hero Alexander Bustamante would grieve over Jamaica’s economic and social conditions and over how the overwhelmi­ng majority of Jamaicans are living. Also the “lopsided” policies of the Government would anger him.
