1980: The Banana Company of Jamaica is putting together a $20-million rescue programme for the hurricane-devastated industry, which is expected to include replanting of about 30 per cent of the 40,000 acres estimated to be now under the crop. The managing director of the company, Anthony Capleton, says that about $5-million of this is to come from crop insurance and the remaining $15-million from outside the industry.

1983:

The Caribbean Basin Initiative (CBI) is described by Deputy Prime Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Hugh Shearer as a measure which will provide substantia­l additional opportunit­ies for Jamaica to produce more goods, employ more people, export more goods and earn more foreign exchange to be used for national developmen­t. He is speaking at a forum on the CBI at the Jamaica National Export Corporatio­n’s offices.

1998:

The Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) says it has distribute­d to the People’s National Party and the Jamaica Labour Party the final voters’ list for local government elections. EOJ Public Informatio­n Officer Neville Graham tells The Sunday Gleaner that the list was delivered to both parties on August 5, 1998. The elections are scheduled to be held on or before September 30, 1998.
