Higgins wrong on better Boyz

-

THE EDITOR, Sir: I REFER to Orville Higgins’ column ‘Modern Boyz better than 1998 team’, published in The Gleaner of August 7, 2015.

The epitome of football achievement is to win the World Cup. To do t hat, t he teams, worldwide, must go through the gruelling qualification process – the incumbent holder of the title included. The prestige is big. Gold Cup qualification is much less intense and the prize not comparable.

Like Mr Higgins, I agree that the current team is impressive and deserves all the accolades. But unlike him, I am cautious to compare with the history-making 1998 squad. No matter what Higgins and others will say to criticise the departed and substantiate their position, the team that achieved higher acclaim is the better of the two.

Even the current squad would agree that Moscow would be their greatest hour! The current team, too, has earned its place in the history books, but that 1998 team has the superior accomplishment.

Still, Mr Higgins’ piece is useful – for the bar and barber shop debates, perhaps! NORMAN LEE namronlee@rogers.com Ontario, Canada
