Seven cheap-date ideas

- Latara Boodie YOUTHLINK WRITER

IT’S COMMON knowledge: most of us are walking around with empty pockets. Let’s face it, with this economy, it is really hard to pull off that extravagant dinner-and-a-movie date most of us like so much. What if you can get that same romantic experience for a little more than a red cent, though? Ok, fine, maybe a lot more, but it still won’t cost you an arm and a leg. Check out our seven cheap-date ideas guaranteed to give you a good time on a tight budget.

1 Picnic

There are several parks scattered across our island that not only provide lovely scenery, but also freedom and fresh air. Get an oversize blanket, pack an inexpensive meal such as cheese or cornbeef sandwiches or biscuits and a beverage, then capitalise on this alternative to dressing up and going to a fancy restaurant. Without the excess cutlery, you get to focus on your date and not on which fork to eat with what meal.

2 Games night

Games nights are awesome! They provide an economical way to bond with your date over a little competition. Play video games or make it more interesting by inviting friends to make it a double or even triple date. Create teams where you have to work together and play Charades or Taboo, just to name a few. You may just be surprised by how well you work together.

3 Run a boat

Why not try an unorthodox means of spending more time together? Cooking with someone can either be a disaster or an enjoyable experience. Instead of going out for dinner, why not save some money by whipping up something delicious?

4 Workout

Exercise releases ‘feel-good’ hormones which boost your mood and give you a more positive outlook on life. Working out with a partner not only makes the workout fun, but also motivates you to do better. If you are a health-conscious person and want to save some extra cash, take your date out for a jog or hike. There are tons of outdoor activities that are fun and that can help burn a few extra calories.

5 Watch out for 2-4-1 specials

There are several establishments that offer half off or 2-for-1 specials. Surf the ’Net and look for deals that can cut your cost in half. You can also find good deals in The Gleaner.

6 Walk around town

The city area usually has many activities going on, especially on weekends. Walk around and check out the cool store displays, or hit up the food court for a cheap snack if there is a mall in your area. Check out some of the activities and entertainment going on outside the stores, too.

7 Beach

Hello, we live on an island, remember! There is a plethora of beautiful, free beaches in every parish. The natural setting can be incredibly romantic, and splashing around can be a great way to get closer to your date.
