Unconventionalspring cleaners

IT IS time to get your spring cleaning on, and we know in this economy purchasing overpriced cleaners might not be in your budget. But not to worry, there are some very inexpensive things in your cupboard that will do the trick.

So this week, we would like to give you a helping hand, sharing some of the varied use of vinegar, lemon, and baking soda, which are fixtures in our home.

Vinegar

a. With a bit of warm water, vinegar works wonders in the microwave, and it does eliminate all the odours that have lingered behind from the different foods you have reheated or cooked.

b. A mixture of water and vinegar is great for removing dirt from your computer keyboard and mouse, making them as good as new.

c. To get rid of those stubborn ink marks takes just a bit of patience. Place full-strength white vinegar on the spot with a sponge. Gently rub the area until it is removed.

Baking soda

a. Sprinkle some baking soda on your carpet. Leave it for 30 minutes to an hour before vacuuming, and it will be as fresh as new.

b. Vinegar and baking soda mixed with warm water is said to help unclog drains. Just pour the solution down the drain and wait.

Lemon juice

a. To get rid of limescale, apply lemon juice to the affected surface and leave for 15 minutes to an hour (this is dependent on the type of surface and the amount of limescale build-up). When completely saturated, scrub away with an old toothbrush.

b. To remove bloodstains, squeeze on affected area. When it begins to fade you can wash with your regular detergent.

c. To prevent limescale build-up in your steam iron, mix distilled water and tap water evenly with lime juice and press your steam button to force the steam mixture through the vents.
