An engine of stable, sustained growth

-

ATHRIVING private sector is critical to Jamaica’s growth and development. In fact, our economic success is largely premised on the role of the private sector in achieving our growth objectives and thereby creating for us, greater wealth and employment opportunities.

Perhaps this fact was well-recognised in 1976 with the founding of the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ). In this regard, I want to pay a special tribute to all those who have served, and those who today continue to be affiliated with this strong, vibrant organisation.

From the Government’s perspective, we welcome the role of the PSOJ as a partner in driving economic growth through investment, employment and new business creation; through innovation and knowledge transfer, and other multiplier effects as a result of your various activities.

We recognise that it is businesses which create jobs, not government, and, as such, we see your role as an engine of accelerated, stable, sustained and inclusive growth. With strong private sector-led growth, we envisage more Jamaicans being able to get jobs with more competitive, profitable and growing businesses, as well as greater access by consumers to Jamaican goods and services.

In the same vein, we must address in a comprehensive way the recurrent challenges that are preventing the private sector from reaching its full potential, including cutting red tape, and, in general, making it easier to start and operate businesses in our country. Equally important, our priorities must include strengthening our quality infrastructure and implementing measures to increase export performance and foster innovation and entrepreneurship. As we move towards a new stage of development in our country, therefore we see the PSOJ as one of our most essential partners for growth. I applaud all members of the organisation for your dedication, for your contributions to nation building, and as you celebrate the 40th anniversary of the PSOJ. KARL SAMUDA Minister of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture & Fisheries
