21 GARY GLITTER, the first of two winners for Panamanian jockey Ameth Robles, bounced back to winning ways in the 3y-o and up overnight allowance race over the straight at Caymanas Park yesterday, covering the distance in the smart time of 57.4 seconds.

Owned by Gordon Lewis and trained by Dalton Sirjue, the improving three-year-old colt by Deputy Glitters out of True Virtue thus made amends for his misfortune on the previous Saturday when failing in his bid for the hat-trick in a 1,200metre race won by FORCE DE JOUJR, having stumbled badly at the start.

This time, however, GARY GLITTER, running at odds of 72, was smartly away from the number seven post position and disputed the lead with SIR BUDGET (7-1) coming on to the main track, with the 8-5 favourite BLUE DIXIE not far adrift at this stage. He gained the ascendancy on the outside approaching the distance, going on to beat SIR BUDGET by three lengths.

Sirjue and Gordon Lewis, a licensed trainer as well, both agreed that GARY GLITTER was woefully unlucky in his previous race.

“He went down on his face leaving the starting gate and also ran wide into the straight,” recalled Sirjue. “In the circumstances, he was not beaten that far and coming back in good nick for this race, losing was out of the question.

Robles came back to win the fifth race aboard the front-running 5-2 chance NO MONEY FRIEND over 1,500 metres, his best day in the saddle in ages. And earlier in the afternoon, the very fit UNBREAKABLE (9-5) capitalised on the misfortune of evens favourite BIGBROWNGREYHOPE (broke down, did not finish) to win the Ossie Steele Memorial Cup feature over 1,200 metres, with Aaron Chatrie riding for trainer Gresford Smith and popular owner O’Shaun Connection.
