Oxitec is able to breed the mosquitoes by giving them an antidote to the self-limiting gene that is not present in the wild. ZIKV has been spreading rapidly throughout the Americas and the Caribbean. According to the World Health Organization, as of August 3, the Zika virus was in approximately 68 countries.
