orders published in the Jamaica Gazette, new postage rates recently announced as coming in force on October 2, 1950 to provide additional revenue for Government will be put into effect as from that date. This order covers not only the rates recently announced for inland letters, newsprint and parcels, most important of which raises the fee on ordinary letters from pennyhalf-penny to two pence and on registered local letters from 3d to 4d, but make new rates for foreign letter and parcel post destinatio­ns all over the world. Part of the revenue accruing from these increased rates will go to meet increased service and carriage changes, and part will accrue to general revenue to meet new proposed commitment­s by Government. 1971:the Two members of

House of Representa­tives as parties to contracts with the Government are exempted from vacating their seats in accordance with constituti­onal provisions. Motions for their exemption are adopted by the House. The first motion by the Minister of Public Utilities and Housing Wilton Hill concerns Tacius Golding (JLP, West St Catherine) whose contract involves the sale of 15 acres of Industry Property in Brown’s Hall, St Catherine for the erection of a junior secondary school. The second motion by David Coore of the Opposition concerned Ernest Peart (PNP North-west Manchester) becoming a director of the House of Ivy Ltd, a company which is a party to certain contracts with the Government.
