KEEPING IT REAL
CHRISTIANA, Manchester: MANY PEOPLE believe that when one becomes a Christian, life automatically becomes less burdensome and everything gets easy. But the truth is that when one surrenders his or her life to God, the devil will do everything in his power to try to add him or her to his fold.
Much like many other young Christians, Sara-Kaye Mighty has been tempted and tried, but she believes that the more you work for God, the less effective the devil’s distractions become.
“I have been a baptised member of the church for approximately 13 years, but I grew up in a Christian home,” Mighty highlighted
Having been taught the doctrines of the Seventh-day Adventist Church from early, Mighty told Family and Religion that there are advantages and disadvantages to being raised in a Christian home.
“When someone who is a part of the world comes into the church, they would have already experienced what exists and would have little to no yearning to return (to that life), but oftentimes, those who grow up in a Christian home will, at some point, want to explore what is out there ...”
Mighty says her main weakness is some worldly apparel.
“For me, it’s really the jewellery and the nails, having to only wear them natural. Sometimes you put on an outfit and you feel it would look better with a necklace, but you can’t really do that. Honestly, that is my main challenge.”
The young Christian currently holds the position of health ministry coordinator at her church.
“I am very active. Last year, I held the post of Adventist Youth leader and, this year, I’m in health. I can’t go to church and have nothing to do and just sit down like regular people. I have to be doing something. I believe when persons are active it keeps them grounded and it gives them another reason to attend church. Programmes like Pathfinder help to keep young people in (church).”
Though we have all fallen short of God’s glory, Mighty says every man is redeemable.
“I have been in a position where I’ve said I don’t deserve to be forgiven, but there was never a time that I thought I was so far from grace.”
In responding to whether Christians have a worthwhile social life, she says it all depends on the individual.
“The one thing you not going to do is go (to) dance. You have so many things you can do, different sporting matches. Christianity is not boring. Some people think you haffi wear long skirt, but I look my best when I am going to church.”
Mighty advises persons to rely on God fully as that is the only way they can get through the life happenings.
