Threat level remains ‘extremely high’ for JCF members

IN THE wake of the earlymorning killing of a policeman on Maxfield Avenue in St Andrew yesterday, superintendent in charge of the Corporate Communications Unit, Stephanie Lindsay, has reiterated that the threat level against members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) remains extremely high.

Lindsay said the force is currently going through a difficult time following the incident.

Dead is 31-year-old police Corporal Kemoi Miller, the fifth member of the force murdered for the year, who was stationed at the Elletson Road Police Station in the Kingston East division.

Police reports are that, around 1 a.m. Sunday, residents in the Maxfield Avenue area called the police after hearing explosions and the sound of a crash.

On arriving at the vicinity of Maxfield Avenue and Alexandria Road, the police saw a black Toyota RAV4 motor vehicle with Miller inside, suffering from gunshot wounds.

He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Four spent shells were found at the scene.

It is uncertain what motivated the attack, but Lindsay said it appears that Miller attempted to escape.

“They (investigators) theorise, based on what they saw, that when he got shot, he attempted to drive away, but he crashed into a wall and a light pole on the location. He never got far. They are trying to ascertain what might have transpired, because we don’t know yet. We just know that we have lost another member,” Lindsay told The Gleaner.

While declaring that this time is a sad one for the JCF, Lindsay made sure to remind officers of the existing threat levels and warned that they be vigilant.
