We salute you for your dedication
THE OBSERVATION of Customs Week brings into sharp focus the significance of protecting our country from potential risks associated with international trade and travel. This year’s theme, ‘Data Analysis for Effective Border Management’, underscores the need to adopt a modern approach to enhance border protection.
I applaud the Jamaica Customs Agency for the launch of its Automated System for Customs Data (ASYCUDA) project, aimed at improving business processes by moving from a paper-based system to online procedures. This will assist in collecting and analysing data and improve customer service by simplifying procedures and reducing waiting time.
Countries are being urged to include data analysis as a strategic priority. Data analysis, coupled with utilisation of modern technology, can unearth important information to improve compliance and facilitation. An innovative approach to border management also reduces instances of organised crime, and assists in achieving the objectives of revenue collection, border security and risk management.
Effective management of our borders through data analysis is a First-World approach that we as a country must adhere to if we are serious about improving the efficiency of Customs.
Our customs officials work tirelessly to protect our borders and we salute them for their dedication. I urge you to remain diligent in carrying out your daily tasks as the security of our borders rests heavily on your shoulders.
The Jamaica Customs Agency is an important stakeholder in our pursuit of economic prosperity. It has embraced the data-driven approach and in going forward will rely on analysis to make informed decisions and take appropriate actions to protect our borders. ANDREW HOLNESS Prime Minister
