Richards shines at Central Champs

-

FIONA RICHARDS and Lushane Wilson each walked away with $25,000 courtesy of D&G Malta to further their education. The students, from Edwin Allen and St Jago High School respectively, were the top performers at the Central Championships held at GC Foster College on March 8th.

Malta has joined forces with Digicel Grand Prix and will be awarding the Champion Boy and Girl at each of the regional championship scholarships valued at $25,000 each. The scholarship is one of many initiatives the brand has planned for 2017 as part of their longstanding commitment to athletics in Jamaica.

“I feel great!” said Richards, “I am thankful for this money from Malta.” The 18-year-old is a fifth-form student who specialises in the shot put and discus field events. Richards had an exceptional performance at Central Champs, recording her personal best, 13.80m, in shot put.

“Fiona’s performance throughout the day indicates that she is resilient, dedicated and has a bright future,” said Nathan Nelms, assistant brand manager for Stouts and Malta at Red Stripe.

“Malta couldn’t be more pleased to award her with this scholarship that will help to fuel her athletic and academic pursuits.”

Malta will also award $25,000 to the Champion Boy and Girl at the DGP finals today at the National Stadium.

“I’m going to train harder and go out on Saturday and push out my best,” said Richards, who has high hopes to receive another Malta cash prize. “I am hoping to break both the discus and shot put records at Boys and Girls Champs; after that I hope that my track and field performance will get me a scholarship to study overseas because I want to become a chartered accountant.”
