Bloody rampage in St James

- Claudia Gardner

Assignment Coordinator WESTERN BUREAU: A MAN believed to be of unsound mind went on a rampage in Norwood, St James, yesterday, chopping four persons, one fatally, before he was killed by angry residents.

Commanding Officer of the St James Police Division, Senior Superintendent Marlon Nesbeth, told The Sunday Gleaner that the carnage started in a shop.

“Early yesterday morning, a group of people were in a shop when a man who is said to be of unsound mind went into the shop, and although they were already served, instructed the shopkeeper to serve them again.

“When this was not done, he stepped away and quickly drew a machete from his person and proceeded to chop three persons in the shop,” said Nesbeth.

“He then ran away from there and went into a man’s house, where he proceeded to chop that man, who, unfortunately, died. Irate residents, on realising what had happened, pursued the attacker, took him from the house and inflicted wounds on him in a mob style. He was killed and someone lit a fire around his body,” added Nesbeth.

The three other injured persons were taken to hospital, where they were admitted.

“I am told that the injuries are serious but not necessarily life-threatening, but there has been much trauma based on the type of wounds, that they will have to recover from,” said Nesbeth.
