THIS DAY IN OUR PAST
The following events took place on April 24 in the years identified:
1956:development The programme of
for the fishing industry, which was not carried through completely in 1955 because of hurricane Janet in September, will be completed this year. A spokesman for the Ministry of Agriculture says that the programme had to be delayed as the Fisheries Division and its staff was engaged in relief measures. However, four things are marked for special emphasis this year. One, the drive for mechanisation of the industry; two, training of fishermen in new fishing methods and techniques; three, the continuation of experiments in freshwater culture; four, an investigation into the lobster potentiality of Jamaican waters. 1981:workers The strike by
employed by the Airports Authority of Jamaica at the island’s two international airports is called off after an agreement is reached for the start of wage negotiations for which the workers had taken the industrial action. Workers in the Airport Protection Services (rescue operations) are scheduled to resume work at 11 p.m. The others workers will resume on April 25. The categories involved are fire engineering unit, maintenance and janitorial services. They are represented by the Trade Union Congress. Under the agreement worked out at the Ministry of Labour, a committee of the board of directors of the Airports Authority will meet with representatives of the union to begin negotiations on Friday, May 1. At that meeting also, the board will disclose new policies it is formulating to make the authority viable.
