Advantage Papine

FIRST-TIME urban area champions Papine High have taken the initiative against many-time rural area champions St Elizabeth Technical (STETHS) at the end of day one of their threeday ISSA National Spalding Cup clash at Melbourne Oval.

STETHS who entered the contest as heavy-favourites, were first bowled out for a paltry 71 in their first innings after losing they lost the toss and were asked to take first strike.

Papine, in reply, then posted 199 in their first innings for a lead of 128. Batting a second time STETHS were again in trouble at 56 for four, still needing 72 runs to make Papine bat again.

UNDERMINED BY SPIN

STETHS were undermined by leg-spinner Rushawn Lee in their first innings. Lee bagged five for 31 and pacers Andre Bailey Kishawn Graham picked up three for 28 and two for 21, respectively.

National youth representative, Andre McCarthy, 18, and Nigel Palmer, 16, made most runs with recent West Indies Under-19 World Cup winning representative, Michael Frew, falling for one.

Papine, in their response, were piloted by openers Raymond Hall 58 and Orande Pearson 45, who put on 109 for the first wicket. Romario Lynch, 24, and Bailey, 30, also got among the runs.

Frew, bowling part-time offspin snared three for 45, and fellow off-spinner Rodienlo Simpson, three for 43.
