Easter blessings f low for blind Clarendonian

- Shanique Samuels Gleaner Writer rural@gleanerjm.com

DENBIGH, Clarendon: THIS EASTER brought great joy for Anthony Salmon, a resident of Denbigh Crescent whose one-room dwelling house was refurbished over the holiday period after it began falling apart several months ago.

Salmon, who is blind and lives alone, complained of severe discomfort after being stung by scorpions that crawled out of the ceiling into his bed. Being a firm believer in Christ, he prayed about the situation and the assistance he hoped for eventually came from Audrey Williams, owner and managing director of Audrey E. Williams Funeral Services, located in Four Paths, Clarendon.

“Not only was the roof falling apart, but whenever it rained, water came in under the door and the floor was really cold because it was pure concrete,” he said, as he explained his plight to Rural Xpress. “I got stung two times, and the last time I spent hours at the hospital. I couldn’t go through that again because it was really a painful experience.” Salmon said he had been living there for the last four years and since then, it has been a struggle.

The matter was brought to Williams’ attention and she decided to assist after a site visit. “I felt compelled to assist even more because he is blind. I’m a people person and I love to help, and he was complaining that he was uncomfortable,” she said, adding that she is delighted to know that she could have helped to make even one person’s life a little better.

A BIT MORE COMFORTABLE

“I’m really grateful to have the house refurbished, because there was a time when the room was really cold and insects started to fall out the ceiling. Now the room is sealed, the floor covered with linoleum and a barrier erected to stop the water seeping into the room whenever it rains. The house is just so comfy now, it feels new ... I’m so happy, I can’t explain how I feel,” said a most grateful Salmon.

“I prayed about my situation, because the Bible says in Psalm 37:4, “Delight in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.” God always place persons in our lives to help us in certain ways, to help us along the way and thanks to Miss Williams, I have been living more comfortable since then, and for that I am really grateful. To God be the glory because getting stung by scorpions was a really painful experience and I don’t think I could endure anymore. I also thank my church brother who took me to the hospital and stayed with me the entire night,” he said.

Approximately $30,000 was spent to undertake the repairs during the Easter holiday by two volunteers who gave their time and skills to assist.
