Mayberry boost for swimming

- Robert Bailey Gleaner Writer

SWIMMING GOT a shot in the arm yesterday when Mayberry Investments handed over $400,000 to facilitate the staging of this year’s all island swim meet.

The Mayberry Investments All-Island swim meet, which is being sponsored by the investment company for the 19th year, will be held at the National Aquatics Centre tomorrow and Saturday.

Anika Jengelley, assistant vice-president of marketing at Mayberry Investments, said this year’s meet promises to be very competitive.

“Last few years, what we have seen is a lot of record breaking performances, and so we are expecting tight competition, as well as good sportsmanship from the students on both days,” said Jengelley.

“I think judging from the performances from the swimmers at the Craft Championships the other day, we are expecting even stronger competition among the older swimmers,” she said.

Jengelley added her company’s sponsorship of the event will help to further develop Jamaica’s swimmers.

SPORTS IN SCHOOL

“We are very big on contributing to sports because we believe that sports in school actually help the students academically and it is deeply rooted in our social corporate responsibility,” Jengelley said.

Handel Laney, president of Amateur Swimming Association, said it is going to be a very exciting two days of competition.

“We have high expectations as usual because this meet has traditionally produced very good

performances from our swimmers and mostly in the prep schools level,” said Laney.

“We know this is the cubicle of swimming because most of our 11-12 swimmers come from this competition,” he said.

“We are also expecting good competition at the high school level because most of our swimmers that are coming back from Craft are still in very good shape going into this meet,” Laney said.

More than 1190 competitors have been registered to compete at the two-day cham-

pionships.

Defending boys’ champions Campion College are expected to face tough competition from last year’s runners-up Wilmer’s Boys, as well as Jamaica College and Hillel Academy.

On the girls’ side, defending champions Immaculate High should face strong challenges from Campion, St Andrew and Wolmer’s Girls.

Meanwhile, Wolmer’s are defending boys and girls prep champions.
