Farmers’ Month – a time to salute our farmers
FARMERS, THE hardworking, persistent and selfless people who continue to provide for our basic resources, must be saluted for their invaluable contribution in the development of this nation.
April, therefore, has been chosen to specially recognise the achievements of farmers in attaining food security and a step towards self-reliance.
Farmers’ Month was first introduced and celebrated by the Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS) in April 1983.
The main objective driving the celebration of Farmers’ Month is that of pausing to recognise the contribution of the nation’s farmers to national development, food security and the farmers’ contribution towards an improved living standard for our rural population.
These objectives are underpinned by the fact that we should thank the Almighty God for his continued guiding hands on the activities of our farmers, and as we recognise that while we plant, the increase comes from God.
Farmers’ Month marks the period in each calendar year when we honour and recognise the significance of the noble profession of farming and the contribution that our farmers make to ensure the nation’s survival.
The JAS has been consistent in the philosophy that ‘Farming is our Heritage, Food is our Culture, From Land to Mouth We are What we Eat so we should all ‘Eat Jamaican, Buy Jamaican and let us all Build Jamaica’.
