1979:Five

of the island’s 12 sugar factories are shut down because of the heavy and prolonged rains, dealing a blow to the expected production target for 1979. A report says that Jamaica Sugar Estate in St Thomas; Innswood in St Catherine; Monymusk and New Yarmouth in Clarendon; and Holland in St Elizabeth are down and several others are operating considerab­ly below capacity. Hampden in Trelawny was forced to cease operation over the weekend, but resumes grinding on a small scale on Monday, June 11.

Seven other internatio­nal players are expected. They are Lars Millbert and Johan Fallby of Sweden, Nigel Taylor from Wales, England’s number four Skylet Andrew and Matthew Syed, Giedoen Joe NG – Canada’s number one, and Dexter St. Louis – Trinidad and Tobago’s number one. The overseas players will join seven Jamaicans in the 16-man tournament. The seven Jamaicans are Stephen Hylton, Garfield Jones, Michael Hyatt, Keith Evans, Andrew Lue, Oral Sinclair, and Owen Irving.
