A sure-can-do attitude at JMMB Merchant Bank
EARL HIGGINS, accountant at Jamaica Money Market Brokers (JMMB) Merchant Bank lives by the words of Henry Ford, “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t – you’re right.”
This mindset has allowed him to overcome the challenges he faces in executing his functions in an ever-changing and fast-paced environment in which he routinely leads the process of ensuring that the company is compliant with the Bank of Jamaica (BOJ) by providing timely and accurate reports within the parameters outlined by the regulators.
He is described by his team leader and financial controller at JMMB, Janet Small, as a consistent high performer whose “sure-can-do attitude” is a great asset to the team. He is known to regularly go beyond the call of duty, with a drive to find a solution to any problem.
“Earl is a results-oriented person, who is always striving for excellence; innovative; and dedicated to the task at hand. He will learn new skills and programmes in order to bring innovation to a process and increase operational efficiency. This is evidenced by the critical role he played in the automation of the bank’s reporting process within record time, thereby improving the bank’s reporting framework,” Small said.
This drive and passion come from a genuine passion for accounting, with Earl declaring that he believes he was born with a calculator in hand. He confesses that he enjoys his role, which requires a clear understanding of the “story that figures tell”, adding that to gain a true understanding of any company’s performance, an appreciation of the numbers is required.
His true team spirit is also demonstrated in his willingness to freely share the knowledge and skills acquired with other team members, having gained much of this expertise from sometimes tireless trial-and-error methods, building on his solid technical competency acquired from ACCA studies.
