This is the summer for it!
SUMMER IS here! School is out, and kids are probably wondering what to do to fill their days. Undoubtedly, the summer parties will come calling, but summer should also include meaningful activities that will enhance personal growth. Therefore, activities and courses that teach new skills and make for a more rounded individual are definitely recommended. If you are a parent, encourage your children to turn the television off, get out of the house, and engage in classes or activities that offer new insights into something in which they have an interest.
Schools, colleges and universities are now offering courses that may not be held during the regular school year. There are short courses on a myriad subjects, including cooking, sewing, forensic science, sports, and theatre arts. Challenge your kids to learn something new. For older children, let them take a course that will not only strengthen their existing skills, but also one that will make them more employable.
A number of summer camps will also be held. Anyone who thinks camp is all about fun and games is missing the point. Summer camp is a very effective teaching environment because it makes learning enjoyable.
Camps can create specific learning opportunities that can be linked to the school curriculum. You can use math skills on a ropes-challenge course. You can study the environment, physics, or astronomy around a campfire. A rafting trip can include a history lesson or a lesson in geography. The beauty of it is that kids don’t think of it as work when they are looking up at the night sky and pointing out the constellations.
