Seaview Gardens basic school needs urgent help
THE EDITOR, Sir: I WANT to draw attention to the community of Seaview Gardens, to a basic school known as the Seaview Gardens Early Childhood Education Centre, a school that is held near and dear to the hearts of many like myself, who was once a student there. As a past student, I cannot help but to feel disdain for how the school is treated by government authorities who should be responsible for its overall care.
If we look beyond the drastic deterioration of the building and what is left of its resources, we will note that the school is a great asset to the community. It is big and the design is such that it can be used to facilitate a many other social community events. It is already used in this manner, despite the condition that it is in. As a side note, the school is in this condition because of depreciation and wear and tear.
The community has called on government authorities to step in to assist in resuscitating the school, but calls have fallen on deaf, unconcerned ears. It is one of the first established basic schools in the community and is critical in preparing students at the early-childhood level to move on to the primary school that is located right next to it.
POOR CONDITIONS
The roof gives way for water falling on the children’s heads when it rains; the kitchen and restrooms need to be revamped in order to be usable classrooms need grilles and the walls need to be repainted. I don’t suppose this is too much to ask of the representatives that who were elected to look after their communities.
We see in the media quite often that “every child can learn; every child must”, yet these children are not being given a chance to learn. Our level of care is measured by how we treat the vulnerable in society; this includes our babies. The rights of our children are as important as the rights of anybody else. They have a right to proper infrastructure in which to learn. Even as a humanitarian gesture, if nothing else, have a heart, PLEASE HELP!
