THIS DAY IN OUR PAST
The following events took place on June 15 in the years identified:
1979:Florizel Governor General
Glasspole and Mrs Glasspole head the list of those who respond to the National Fund appeal launch by the prime minister and the leader of the Opposition on Thursday, June 14, with contributions of $1,000 each. Mr and Mrs Glasspole give $500. ICB and Grace are to give $50,000 each. The Prime Minister’s Office accepts The Gleaner’s offer to acknowledge publicly the names of contributors. The Gleaner will also assist in receiving contributions. The other organisations receiving contributions are all branches of the Bank of Nova Scotia and of the Jamaica National Building Society. Over 40 people lost their lives in the disastrous flood rains earlier this week, and millions of dollars worth of damage is done, particularly in the western parishes. 1993:A
ticket bonanza incentive is at the heart of a programme aimed at motivating commuters to demand tickets from bus operators. This incentive scheme is central to a proposal aimed at improving the service offered by bus operators. President of the National Transportation Co-operative Society Ltd, Ezroy Millwood, makes this announcement at a press conference at the Four Seasons Hotel in Kingston. According to Millwood, elements of the proposal include: A bonanza ticket incentive – a programme created to encourage consumers to demand their tickets from conductors. Tickets will be in duplicate and there will be a quarterly draw for prizes in cash; driver and conductor of the month – the team copping this monthly award will receive cash incentives. There will also be a driver and a conductor of the month; and a school incentive programme to encourage schoolchildren to queue up at bus stops.
