Eating clean with Zoleah Café

- Jody-Anne Lawrence Gleaner Writer

ZOLEAH CAFÉ, a cosy little haven tucked away at Seymour Park, St Andrew, caters to the palates of vegan and vegetarians.

Joan Brown was persuaded, or rather inspired, to start Zoleah Café by her daughter, Zoann Tulloch, after she had already started Zoleah Naturelle organic skincare line in January. She had set up the skincare line after her job was made redundant last November. Tulloch loved to bake and make sweet treats, and so, being a vegetarian, she wanted to provide meals that persons with her diet would enjoy.

A month ago, Brown joined forces with her daughter and got the venture up and running. It started out with juices and sweet treats like their vegan cookies and granola bars that are made in-house. These treats are sugar-free, sweetened with either maple syrup or honey.

patties and cupcakes from outside distributors.

“It was going well, but then our customers wanted to know if we were going to provide more than pastry. So, we revised the menu and included lunch options,” Brown told Food.

There is a different lunch special each day to cater to vegan and vegetarian customers. But even if you are neither, but want to go meatless for a day, this would be a good option.

The chickpea wrap with mango chutney is a hit among customers. However, the mother-and-daughter duo seem divided on what their favourites are. Tulloch loves the wrap, and Brown is smitten with the lasagna. Zoleah Café also offers sandwiches.

SMOOTHIES

When it comes to smoothies, the Shake Yuh Paw Paw smoothie is a customer favourite. This is a papaya, banana smoothie that includes the necessary grains and fruits to make it just a little sweet to the taste but still good for you. The juice menu includes everything from green to fruit juices.

And if you need that extra boost of energy, they have you covered with a cold coffee blend. A shot of rum has nothing on their turmeric shot. A blend of turmeric, ginger and cayenne pepper, among other ingredients, will be a little on the spicy side going down but you won’t have to worry about a hangover.

They provide lunch delivery in the Liguanea and New Kingston areas.
