Alumina company awards $5.5m in scholarships
FIFTY STUDENTS pursuing tertiary-level studies at local universities have been awarded scholarships and grants from West Indies Alumina Company (WINDALCO) totalling $5.5 million.
The students were awarded at a ceremony at WINDALCO’s Ewarton Works plant last week.
The awards fall under the company’s annual local scholarship and grant programme which provides financial assistance to university students across the island.
“For any company, the most precious capital is the human resource. Therefore, WINDALCO will continue to invest in the development of human resources and the education of children in Jamaica,” said WINDALCO’s managing director, Leonid Stavitskiy, pledging to continue to provide financial support to students who qualify.
RECIPIENTS GRATEFUL
Two-time scholarship recipient Teleisa Graham said she was grateful for the financial assistance that allowed her to complete her nursing studies at the Northern Caribbean University this year.
Meanwhile, first-time scholarship recipient Sherifa Cohen thanked the company for what she termed an investment in the hopes and dreams of Jamaicans.
“Access to education is not a right but a privilege, due to the economic constraints of many of our families. When WINDALCO invests in us, it is an opportunity that elevates us from mediocrity to greatness. It brings hope to our families and helps Jamaicans move one step closer to our 2030 dreams of being the place of choice to live, work, do business and raise families,” said Cohen.
