AREN’T BRACES FOR KIDS?
While it is better to start treatment at an early age, while the jaws are still growing, orthodontics can be implemented on anyone at any age, provided you have healthy teeth and gums.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT?
Your orthodontist will take: A detailed dental and medical history.
Impressions of your teeth – the dentist will pour a malleable plaster into a mould to take an accurate model of your bite.
X-rays of the teeth and skull to identify any hidden issues.
The orthodontist will then implement a customised plan, with specifically selected appliances to shift and rearrange the teeth into the desired position. The device is designed by the orthodontist and requires a great deal of care by the patient. You can expect a bit of appliance maintenance, for example, braces may make it challenging to remove food and plaque from the teeth. Patients, therefore, have to pay extra attention to their oral care with multiple brushings a day.
WHAT’S NEXT?
Once your appliance is removed, it is the tendency for the teeth to slowly return to their old positions. To prevent this, patients will continue to wear a retainer. This can be a removable brace that snaps into place, or a thin wire attached to the back of the teeth.
THE BIG REVEAL!
The end results of orthodontic treatment are perfectly aligned teeth and a healthy smile that you’ll be proud to show at every opportunity. Of course, for the best results, patients must do their part – that means wearing all appliances and accessories as instructed by the orthodontist, and taking care to keep teeth and appliances impeccably clean.
THE BENEFITS OF ORTHODONTICS
A great smile. Aligned teeth that are easier to keep clean and healthy.
Correction of protruding – ‘bucked’-teeth that are prone to injury and spaces that may lead to the need of dentures or a bridge.
Eliminating harmful teeth and jaw development habits such finger sucking, etc.
Reduced chance of gingivitis and gum disease. Better chewing and digestion. Greater confidence and feeling of acceptance.
