Appalled at ZOSO melodrama

CRIME AND violence is a real problem in Jamaica, and that is a well-known fact. Therefore, any attempt at curbing rampant crime that plagues our country should be met with some level of optimism. That was the case for many — including myself — when the zones of special operations were first introduced.

The result of what I would call a test run has left me appalled. Appalled with my mouth gaping wide open because I cannot come to grips with what transpired.

What I have observed is the ultimate political football. The Government made a grand announcement to set the stage, the Opposition stood on the sidelines as critical spectators while opting not to be left out, the socialmedia commentators voiced their disgust and discontent with the outcome.

Why do we have people taking pictures for public relations within an announced zone? Was the zone chosen on a political plane? What exactly do we look like among ourselves and to the outside world when we announce a zone, only to retreat and say that the incorrect information was received from the police?

You see, crime and violence is too much of a serious matter to be treated with such triviality. In this small country, having recorded 1,005 murders, up to August, since the start of the year, with increasing figures as the months go by is cause for serious concern.

I sincerely hope that the day will come when the well-being and protection of our people takes precedence over the usual political banter. KIMBERLEY THOMPSON kimberleythompson81@yahoo.com
