PFAJ a bystander in MBU money issue – Anderson
PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL Association of Jamaica (PFAJ) chairman Don Anderson said that although match officials have been paid for their work in last season’s Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL), there is still uncertainty regarding the date for the first round of this year’s competition.
This is reportedly because money is still owed to former RSPL champions Montego Bay United (MBU) by the Premier League Clubs Association (PLCA).
A statement released by the PFAJ yesterday said that it and the PLCA have worked together to issue a cheque to the referees to cover over $4 million owed to them. The statement added that it is now awaiting a resolution to MBU’s issue.
“The PFAJ is extremely pleased that the referees have now been paid and have been assured by them that they are ready to commence duties in the Red Stripe Premier League as soon as the other vexed matter involving the Montego Bay United Football Club has been settled.
“The PFAJ hopes that this matter will also be expeditiously dealt with in order to facilitate the start of the league within the shortest possible time,” the statement said.
However, Anderson said that a solution to MBU’s problem is in the hands of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF).
“The PFAJ is a bystander, at the moment, in this particular situation,” he told The Gleaner. “The JFF, as the governing body for the sport, has taken on this particular responsibility to sort that matter out.”
Anderson said that it is important to start the league as soon as possible, to be considerate to all stakeholders.
“As to when the league will start, I’m not sure, but we all hope that the league will start in the shortest possible time because we know that we have a responsibility to the players, the clubs, the spectators, the media and of course our sponsors to ensure that the league starts soon.”
