Man United held by Stoke
STOKE, England (AP): MANCHESTER UNITED’S perfect start to the season ended in a 2-2 draw at Stoke in the fourth round of the English Premier League yesterday.
Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting became the first player to score against United this season when he netted twice for Stoke.
The Cameroon forward’s opener was cancelled out by Marcus Rashford in first-half stoppage time. After Romelu Lukaku put United in front in the 57th minute, ChoupoMoting headed in Stoke’s equaliser six minutes later.
United had scored 10 goals without reply in its three victories before the international break.
United and Manchester City are the early pacesetters in the league with 10 points each. They are separated by only goal difference.
Meanwhile, Harry Kane scored his first goals of the Premier League season to help Tottenham beat Everton 3-0.
Kane, who has never scored in the top flight in August, struck his 100th goal for Tottenham in all competitions when an unintentional crossshot swerved into the top corner in the 28th minute.
Kane, last season’s top scorer in the league, clipped in a second goal from close range in the first minute of the second half.
Christian Eriksen was also on target in the 42nd minute in a controlled and clinical display from the London side, which has collected six of its seven points of the season on the road.
Liverpool went from dishing out a humiliation to being on the receiving end of one.
A 5-0 loss at Manchester City yesterday handed Juergen Klopp his biggest loss in two years managing Liverpool. And it quickly punctured the optimism gathering around Liverpool following a 4-0 victory over Arsenal before the international break.
“I am not concerned in the
long term,” Klopp said. “It was hard for the boys but I don’t look for excuses.”
Klopp was clearly unhappy that Sadio Mane was sent off in the first half for a high challenge on Ederson, which saw the City goalkeeper carried off on a stretcher.
Trailing only 1-0 through Sergio Aguero’s goal when it was 11 vs 11, Liverpool conceded another four goals as City produced the type of imposing attacking display missing so far this season. Both Gabriel Jesus and Leroy Sane scored twice.
