St Mary’s College’s Edwards out of hospital
ST MARY’S College defender Shandaye Edwards is now at home after he was released from the University Hospital of the West Indies on Saturday night. Edwards was admitted after collapsing on the field after a collision with a Camperdown High player during their Group C ISSA/FLOW Manning Cup match earlier in the day.
Principal of St Mary’s College, Ryon Williams, told The Gleaner that he was not sure if the defender would be available to play in the team’s four remaining matches this season.
“He has done the CT scan and it showed no damage, so they sent him home,” said Williams.
After being taken to the hospital, Edwards spoke and functioned normally, but fell in and out of consciousness periodically.
Williams describes the incident involving Edwards as “very scary” and said that it reminded him of last year when St George’s captain, Dominic James, collapsed and died during a Manning Cup game against Excelsior at the Stadium East Field.
“After remembering last year’s incident with the St George’s College player who died, it was a scary ordeal for me,” said Williams.
“The players are concerned about their teammate, but they are in good spirits and they are looking forward to the remaining matches,” he said.
St Mary’s College, who were beaten
9-0 by Camperdown on Saturday, are still without a point in the competition, having lost all their five matches.
However, Williams said he is still
hopeful that his team will give a good account of themselves in their remaining games.
“I am expecting full points from
these games because the boys have been working hard and I know that they will do their best,” Williams said.
