REIGNING CHAMPIONS Jamaica College sealed a spot in the semi-finals of the ISSA/FLOW Manning Cup when they edged Calabar High 1-0 in a quarter-final Group H game at Constant Spring yesterday.

JC’s star midfielder Tyreke Magee netted a magnificent free-kick in the 83rd minute past Calabar’s goalkeeper Deandre McCoy to send his team into the last four with a game remaining.

Miguel Coley, the JC coach, was happy that his team advanced to the semi-finals early.

TOUGH GAME

“It was a tough game. I was surprised to see how Calabar played. Based on their history, they play one good game and then a bad game. They were very fit and ran with us, but we knew that in terms of quality they could not match us,” Coley who is yet to lose a Manning Cup game in the past four years at JC, told The Gleaner after the game.

He praised Magee for scoring a wonderful free kick.

“I am happy that he scored such a wonderful free kick but he is not where we want him to be as yet. He will get better as the season progresses,” Coley said about his key player.

Coley is already looking forward to the clash with KC on Saturday.

“It will be a very good game. We want to keep the momentum going. We won’t relax,” he shared.

Meanwhile, Magee said it is a very good feeling to score the winning goal.

“It is a very good feeling to reach the semi-finals of the Manning Cup as everybody has been working hard. We are getting better with each game. The win helps us to be free (without pressure) going into the next game,” Magee said.

In the day’s second game at the venue, STATHS and Holy Trinity battled to a scrappy 0-0 draw.

Kingston College took a big step towards the semi-finals by blanking Bridgeport High 3-0 at the Spanish Town Prison Oval.

The win moved them to four points but they are still not sure of a semi-final berth.

Defeat by JC and a big win by Calabar could see them lose out.
