1975:The

interventi­on of the minister of labour and employment, Ernest Peart, in the four-week strike at Kaiser Bauxite Company, Discovery Bay, is now possible after yet another breakdown of talks at the ministry. The Gleaner understand­s that the minister will be asked to take up the issue, which several meetings conducted by the Ministry’s Industrial Relations Office failed to resolve. The National Workers Union (NWU), which represents the workers, insists that the company raise its wage offer to the workers before resumption. The company, on the other hand, says that it will revise the offers to the workers, but only after a resumption is effected. 1999:operators Jamaican consumers. Members of the Jamaica Gasolene Retailers Associatio­n (JGRA), which represents service station operators, tell the Economy and Production Committee of Parliament that in recent years, marketing companies had been increasing­ly taking away dealership­s from operators in prime locations across the island. 1999:students Teachers and

at William Knibb Memorial High School and Granville All-Age, as well as hundreds of people working in the Trelawny capital of Falmouth, are trapped because of roads choked with water from heavy rains. A teacher at William Knibb says the water rose to as high as about two metres. Up to news time, the Falmouth Fire Department was still working to evacuate students and teachers.
