- Krysta Anderson Gleaner Writer krysta.anderson@gleanerjm.com

IT WAS a grand affair for Koreans and Jamaicans at the Korean National Day reception held at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge last Thursday. The threat of inclement weather could not dissuade diplomats and other specially invited guests from coming out in their numbers to celebrate such a significant day in Korean history. The anthems of both countries were sung by the collaborative team of Korean and Jamaican students, signalling the start of the evening’s formal proceedings. Chargé d’affaires of the Republic of Korea Young Gyu Lee revealed that it was the first time he was celebrating his national day in Jamaica. He spoke highly of the similarities between both countries and elaborated on the great relationship shared between both nations. Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Marcia Roberts first apologised for the absence of Minister of Justice Delroy Chuck before congratulating the Korean Chargé d’Affaires on celebrating his first independence on the island.

She noted that the Republic of Korea was now ranked as one of the world’s developed states and hoped that Jamaica would follow suit. She highlighted the bilateral cooperation and strong bonds of friendships they shared. With aspirations of strengthened friendship and understanding, Roberts and Lee toasted to continued success.

From there, guests indulged in Korean and Jamaican dishes in the great outdoors while enjoying entertainment from the International Youth Fellowship — a Korean cultural group based in Jamaica – and KPOP, a local group of Jamaican dancers.
