STETHS in first Super Cup final

- Robert Bailey Sunday Gleaner Writer

ST ELIZABETH Technical High School (STETHS) produced a brilliant fightback at Sabina Park yesterday to reach their first ISSA-FLOW Super Cup final.

The Santa Cruz-based school came from 2-0 down, midway the second half, to level the scores in the semi-final and then clipped Calabar High 6-5 in the subsequent penalty shoot-out to send their supporters into wild celebrations.

Winning coach Omar Wedderburn praised his players for fighting to the end.

“We went down 2-0, but we never gave up,” said Wedderburn.

He added: “We are very happy to be in the final for the first time. We are ambassadors for the ‘country’ (rural areas), and that is not going to change.”

Clifton Woodbine, Rujay Robinson, Tahjae Green, Chris-Andrew Dixon, Alex Thompson, and Demar James converted penalties for STETHS in the shoot-out.

Calabar had earlier taken control late in the first half when star player Orane Ferguson scored from the penalty spot then put the Red Hills Road-based school 2-0 up in the 57th minute.

Clifton Woodbine pulled a goal back for STETHS from the penalty spot in the 75th minute, then, with time running out, Demar James grabbed the equaliser in the 80th minute.

STETHS dominated possession in the first half, but they had little to show for it as poor shooting from striker Denroy Miller let them down.

However, they found themselves trailing before half-time when a defender handled Calabar High’s Orane Ferguson (centre) dribbles past St Elizabeth Technical’s (STETHS) defenders Nicholas Nelson (right) and Clifton Woodbine during the first ISSA-FLOW Super Cup semi-final at Sabina Park yesterday. STETHS advanced to the final after a 6-5 win on penalties.

the ball in the area, and Ferguson scored at the second attempt from the penalty spot after his first attempt had hit the inside of the post.

Ferguson doubled Calabar’s lead 12 minutes into the second half. A shot to goal rebounded off the crossbar and the lanky

forward was there to head past the STETHS goalkeeper, Shavar Foster.

Woodbine’s penalty, following a foul in the box, reduced the deficit for STETHS. Then James netted the equaliser when he dribbled around two Calabar defenders to calmly slot the ball home past goalkeeper Deandre McCoy.
