Cavalier invited to Gothia Cup
HEAD COACH and president of Cavalier SC Rudolph Speid announced earlier this week that the team has been invited to take part in the Gothia Cup, a preseason youth tournament scheduled for July 1521 next year in Gothenburg, Sweden.
Speid, who is excited about the invitation to what he said is the world’s largest international youth football tournament, said that he plans to use the Red Stripe Premier League to nurture these young players who he plans to feature in the tournament.
“There is a host of young talented players going on that trip, so one of the reasons why I have to groom the players in the senior team is because we are going to try and win the competition,” said Speid, who expect a lot of scouts to be at what he described as “the world youth cup” of club football.
Speid, who said that young players are easier to deal with, argued that seeing Monaco win France’s Ligue 1 with a very young squad gives him confidence in his young team. “We were very inspired by what Monaco did last year with a lot of young players and that is something we try to emulate. There are a lot of positives using young players. They are excited, tend to work hard, and don’t find too much fault when something goes wrong,” he said.
Speid was asked about the addition of more young players to the squad in the upcoming January transfer window. He told The Gleaner that his policy is about nurturing young talent.
The club already has a number of young players who stood out in this season’s schoolboy football competitions, such as Kaheem Parris of Dinthill Technical, Jamoi Topey of Camperdown High, Jaedin White of St Andrew Technical and Kingston College’s Dwayne Atkinson.
Cavaliers defeated English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspurs’ U-15 team in the finals of a preseason tournament in the Cayman Islands earlier this year.
