Serge announces $3.1m sponsorship of St Thomas football

-

SERGE, MANUFACTURERS and distributors of quality dairy products, have announced a $3.1-million sponsorship of football in St Thomas. The announcement was made at the launch of the Serge St Thomas Football Association Major League, held at the York Complex on Saturday, February 17.

The amount represents the largest single sponsorship for the parish’s football in recent times. The St Thomas FA has created a very good brand, pioneering the very attractive night football with the flagship event ‘Wednesday Night Football’. This event attracted massive spectator support during the sponsorship by The Captain’s Bakery and Grill.

Kerrian Johnson, group marketing manager for Seprod, said at the launch that the partnership with the St Thomas FA was driven by a love for football and the power of sport in creating team work while building communities. She explained that when the company was approached by the St Thomas Football Association, Serge had no hesitation in coming on board.

The special guest, Jamaica Football Federation President Michael Ricketts, commended Serge for this important relationship and hailed the colourful branding of the complex and the variety of products on hand for sampling. He also praised the St Thomas FA for the impressive surface at the York Complex.

IDEAL PARTNERSHIP

President of the St Thomas FA, Wayne Thompson, while lauding Serge for the vision in sponsoring the parish’s football, mentioned that the partnership is mainly for the clubs. He said the affiliates have been very patient when funds were low to execute the programmes of the association. He also added that the partnership is ideal, recognising the proximity of the Serge plant to the York Complex, where night football is played and the Seaforth Sports Complex, literally located in the backyard of the Serge plant.

Eleven teams will par ticipate in two zones playing home and away in the preliminary rounds. Games will also be played, across zones with a twoway semi-final and final.

In the opening games played after the launch, a goal by Romaine O’Hara in the 18th minute saw Berlin lead Yallahs 1-0 in the feature match before the game was aborted due to a light failure in the 60th minute. In the opening game, Bath and Port Morant All Stars ended 0-0.
