A beacon of education excellence

-

MEADOWBROOK PREPARATORY School was established by the Presbyterian Church in Jamaica (now The United Church in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands,) with Webster Memorial as its sponsor.

A committee consisting of some members of the Board of Governors of Meadowbrook High School was formed in the latter part of 1960, and along with the Rev Madge Saunders, it made plans for setting up the school. Through untiring and dedicated efforts, the opening of the school became a reality on January 16, 1961, with 28 students.

In January 1962 the school’s location was changed to the home of Rev Saunders. The negative attitudes she encountered and the fear expressed that the young children would destroy the beautiful garden and her house did not dampen her spirit. To her, the training of little children to appreciate and learn to care for the flowers as well as the building was an important aspect of their general education.

A year later, the school was enlarged and extended to an adjoining property (10 Flemington Drive, our present home), which was purchased by the United Church. A dedication service was held on January 14, 1963, and this new building was officially opened on February 28 of the same year.

The school has been an interdenominational fee-paying institution for boys and girls between the ages of three and 12 years. Its aim is to instil sound Christian values in each child.

Daily worship plays an integral part of school life for teachers and pupils. Every Wednesday morning, all grades, along with the teachers, worship in the Meadowbrook United Church with the ministers assigned to the church.

ROUND EDUCATION

With its motto, ‘Preparing To Serve’, the school sets out to provide a rounded education as we prepare students academically, spiritually, socially, and culturally for entry into secondary education.

In an attempt to instil positive, lasting values of sharing, competing, discipline, integrity, and confidence in each child, specific activities are organised to motivate students. Pupils are given the opportunity to take part in preparatory school competitions.

Meadowbrook Preparatory School is a beacon of education excellence. Not only does the school excel in academics, garnering GSAT scholarships over the years and winning the KFC Prep/Primary Quiz Competition in 2004, the Port Authority Cricket Competition as well as visual art competitions, but it is known for its prowess in the extracurricular activities, garnering numerous medals in the annual Jamaica Cultural development Commission (JCDC) festival competition in dance, music, speech and drama. Of note is our latest achievement in TVJ’s Junior Schools’ Challenge Quiz Competition 2017, where we were first runners-up.

We will continue to write our history at this blessed institution.
