Endless food, fun and entertainment at Curry Festival
COME AND enjoy a full day of delicious food, endless fun and entertainment at the Bigga Westmoreland Curry Festival 2018 this weekend.
The calendar event will be held at the Manning’s School in Savannala-Mar, Westmoreland, on Sunday, April 29. A barrier-breaking, bumper-to-bumper crowd of curry lovers from western Jamaica and across the country is anticipated.
“Last year, we had around 4,000 patrons, but for our 18th staging this Sunday, we expect around 5,000 people because Westmoreland is curry country,” said Viviene Richards, who chairs the organising committee.
The ultimate outdoor day-and-night food festival promises a platter of diverse curry-themed dishes to be prepared by the 20 vendors who will be on show. Among the delicacies to be included are curry conch, curry crab, curry octopus, curry breadfruit, curry jerk and much more mouthwatering food.
“I had dialogue with one of the vendors who was among the first to come at this show, and she said that she will be coming with her curry ice cream,” Richards said.
FAMILY-ORIENTED ACTIVITIES
“Also, the vendors, who are from all over Jamaica, like Montego Bay and Little Ochi, were asked to each do an authentic dish representing another Caribbean island. So we will be having authentic curry dishes from Barbados, India, Thailand, Trinidad, Cuba, France, Italy, St Lucia and, of course, Jamaica,” she added.
The event will include a number of family-oriented games and activities, including a domino competition, a horror house, bingo, a video game house, face painting and a massive kiddies village. The Heights Marching Band will be performing, and there will be ice and fruit carvings, as well as a performance by entertainer and comedian Granny.
The Ministry of Health will also be on site to provide advice on healthy living and tips to the health conscious
“In the night, our gospel segment will be headlined by singer Kevin Downswell, who will share stage with other local acts. We will have Short Boss and Jada Kingdom on stage with Lans, Ding Dong and Assassin (Agent Sasco) to headline our reggae segment,” Richards explained.
Gates open at 12 noon, while showtime is 3 p.m. The first patron for the day will be given a prize by major sponsor Wisynco.
“We are urging everyone to come out early and enjoy our many curry dishes and entertainment at this wholesome, family-oriented calendar event,” said Richards.
