Fowler-Reid not surprised by coach’s decision to quit

CAPTAIN OF Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls Jhaniele FowlerReid says that she is not surprised by the sudden resignation of coach Sasher-Gaye Henry.

Fowler-Reid, who plays in the Australian Suncorp Super League netball competition, told The Sunday Gleaner that while not surprised, she was saddened by the decision.

“To be honest, I feel that she wouldn’t have left us if it wasn’t in her best interest,” said Fowler-Reid.

“Sometimes you have to put yourself first, and so I feel that whatever personal reasons she had for leaving us, I am sure she thought about it carefully, and if it is the best thing for her, then I support her 100 per cent,” Fowler-Reid added.

The Sunday Gleaner has learnt that Henry is disappointed with her remuneration package. It is also understood that Henry, who handed in her resignation to the Dr Paula Daley-Morrisled organisation a few days ago, also did not fill out a section of Netball Jamaica’s Commonwealth Games team report form, which was handed to her following last month’s Commonwealth Games.

Fowler-Reid now hopes that Netball Jamaica will appoint someone who is capable of leading the team to future success.

“Personally, I feel that we need to regroup and, hopefully, the management staff will make a good decision in bringing someone else on board, and whoever they bring on board, I hope it would be in the best interest of the team,” said Fowler-Reid. “I am looking forward to see how they handle this situation.”

Henry, who is a former national player, was named along with Marvette Anderson as co-head coaches of the Sunshine Girls programme at the end of July last year, following the resignation of Jermaine Allison-McCracken.
