Division 23 East – Lieutenant Governor Sharon Williams: Kiwanis One Day Project
KIWANIS ONE Day is a global day of service that unites the entire Kiwanis family, including Kiwanis, Aktion Club, Circle K, Key Club, Builders Club and KKids. On this day, thousands of Kiwanians and friends around the world devote hours to hands-on service to improving the lives of the most vulnerable, children, underserved groups, and/or lend a hand to community projects.
On October 28, the day designated as Kiwanis One Day, more than 150 Kiwanis, other members of the K-family and their guests from clubs in Division 23 East assisted in giving the Oncology Ward at the Victoria Jubilee Hospital a new look in a bid to brighten the environment of the patients and to bring some cheer to their surroundings. The activities included painting the ward, renovating the bathroom with new fixtures, and providing screens for the ward. The Kiwanians also donated televisions to help to make the space more comfortable for the patients.
The project was especially timely as October marks Breast Cancer Awareness month, and the ward houses approximately 40 patients, most of whom are terminally ill. At the official unveiling of the new look of the Oncology Ward, Matron Fairweather Blackwood commended the Kiwanians for their altruistic service and helping in the healing process with the beatification of the environment.
Lieutenant Governor Sharon Williams highlighted the high energy, commitment, and camaraderie surrounding the execution of the project, saying, “I am happy to be a part of the experience of providing hands-on service, and it is even more gratifying for our members as they make an immediate, measurable impact on our local community.”
Sponsors of the event included Bio Medical, Sherwin Williams, EDUCOMM, and Betting, Gaming & Lotteries Commission.
