Netball Jamaica cancels meeting with coach Henry

WAYNE LEWIS, communication director of Netball Jamaica (NJ), says the association has cancelled a scheduled meeting with former co-coach of the Sunshine Girls team Sasher-Gaye Henry.

Lewis said the action was taken after Henry indicated that she will not be returning to her post.

Lewis told The Gleaner yesterday that the NJ board will meet next Tuesday to decide whether to appoint another cocoach or to appoint current cocoach Marvette Anderson as the head of the Sunshine Girls team.

“There will be no meeting with her because she has advised the board that she is no longer interested and she has moved on,” said Lewis.

“The board has accepted that, and we will be having a board meeting hopefully on Tuesday to look at our options going forward,” he said.

“We will be going in a different direction because she has made it quite clear that she has moved on, and so, there will be no meeting,” Lewis said.

Henry, who, along with Anderson, was appointed in July last year following the resignation of Jermaine AllisonMcCracken, resigned recently, citing family responsibilities and administrative weaknesses in the association.

Lewis added that the board is still shaken and shocked by Henry’s sudden resignation.

“The board is still totally confused because we don’t know enough. We don’t know anything ...,” said Lewis.

“We were hoping to have a discussion with her to find out what other issues she was having, but that is not going to materialise because she has indicated that she is not going to come back,” he said.

Henry, along with Anderson, led the Sunshine Girls to the bronze medal at last month’s Commonwealth Games, which were held on Australia’s Gold Coast. The Sunshine Girls won the bronze medal after defeating New Zealand 60-55.

Henry was very popular with members of the national netball team and was instrumental in getting top goalshooter Romelda Aiken back into the team after a two-year break.
