Worrisome garbage problem in Hanover

- Bryan Miller/Gleaner Writer

THE NON-COLLECTION of garbage in Hanover is said to be at an alltime high, and the parish’s municipal authority is seeking to have the situation fixed urgently. However, Western Parks and Markets (WPM) says that the collection is being hampered by the unavailability of trucks.

Andrew Walker, WPM’s Western Hanover zonal monitor, told last Thursday’s monthly meeting of the Hanover Municipal Corporation that the collection trucks for the parish have been down and undergoing repairs for some time.

“If anyone knows of any owners of trucks who would be willing to work with Western Parks and Markets to assist in alleviating the situation, they should inform me so that the necessary contact and arrangements can be made,” Walker told the meeting.

LABOUR DAY GARBAGE UNCOLLECTED

While acknowledging the existing situation, councillors expressed grave concerns about the likely negative effects of the uncollected garbage on the parish. It was also pointed out that excessive garbage generated from Labour Day activities had not yet been cleared.

“There are piles of garbage in all the communities and in some schools to the extent that some schools are on the verge of closing their doors as it is becoming unhealthy,” one councillor pointed out.

Dr Kaushal Singh, the acting medical officer of health for the parish, said he was concerned as uncollected garbage could pose serious health risks.

“All garbage are potential breeding sites for mosquitoes, especially the Aedes aegypti, and also for rodents,” said Singh.
