Barbican keep pace in promotion play-off

- Marc Stamp/Gleaner Writer

BARBICAN FC head coach Wayne Campbell is happy for his team’s 1-0 win against Wadadah FC but disappointed with their performance in the Magnum/Charley’s JB/JFF Premier League promotion play-off series at the Barbican Complex yesterday.

Barbican earned the victory courtesy of a strike by midfielder Andrew Christie in the 16th minute. The winners squandered a lot of clear chances, especially diminutive striker Locksley Thompson.

The win moved Barbican to eight points, the same as Dunbeholden FC, in the race for the two available spots for qualification to next season’s Red Stripe Premier League. However, Dunbeholden, winners of the South Central Confederation, are ahead on goal difference.

“We could have killed the game off from the first half but failed to score the chances and came under a bit of pressure from Wadadah,” Campbell told The Gleaner immediately after the game.

It was nervy, but we are happy to cross the line. There is a lot of work to be done, but mentally, it is good for the team going forward,”he added.

Two-time Premier League champions Wadadah suffered their fourth consecutive loss and are out of contention for a place in next season’s top-flight league.

Dwayne Frater, manager of Wadadah, said his team did not play at their best.

“We have made some silly mistakes, some schoolboy errors. We were depleted because some players are away and others are injured,” Frater pointed out.

In another game, Mount Pleasant Football Academy and Dunbeholden battled to a 0-0 draw.
