Garbage disposal and lack of civic pride

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THERE IS an unofficial ‘Riverton’ behind the Old Harbour Police Station and courthouse, across from Scotiabank and right beside the Old Harbour Tax Office, smack in the middle of the town. The garbage has taken over the sidewalk and is piling up to the top of the wall of the tax office.

If the situation is not dealt with immediately, we run the risk of repeating what happened in New Kingston some years ago with rat infestation. There are too many food establishments in the town for anyone to be comfortable with the ongoing act of nastiness. The police need to investigate who is responsible for the nastiness, while the evervocal member of parliament, Mr Everald Warmington, whose office is not far away, the councillor and Ministry of Health should ensure the nasty practice cease and desist with immediate effect.

On another note, there is a huge ‘pool’ in the gully behind the Horizon Adult Remand Centre on Spanish Town Road. The hole is filled with black, stagnant water which gives life to the little pest that had a whole country clamouring for one Panadol just recently. The hole is widening and the correctional officers, detainees, and surrounding communities that are filled with children, who will be home for the summer, will feel the sting of the new ‘tiger mosquito’ that are hatching. The hole has also compromised the integrity of the gully’s right retaining wall, and if not attended to, this hurricane season will deteriorate the wall on the prison side.
