Fun in the Son line-up to win souls through testimony

FUN IN the Son Gospel Fest is more than just a free and entertaining show where Christians can have a good time. In fact, the popular summer event is more of an avenue for sinners to find repentance than for those who already know Christ, according to founder of the event Tommy Cowan.

“When we think about the purpose of Fun in the Son, we think about attracting the lost, saving souls, and partnering with the Church for the discipleship of those who are saved. We see ourselves as a gateway for those who need to meet Christ. We see the Church as a place to mature the people who are saved,” Cowan explained.

And while it is true that supporters who are already saved are able to enjoy a pure Jamaican worship experience, much of what is done at Fun in the Son is to save souls.

According to Cowan, “People who are not saved cannot truly worship on an emotional level because they do not have a personal relationship with God. While they may admire the Christians who are engaged in worship, they can’t participate. Therefore, we focus on attracting those who do not know Christ with the concert-style approach knowing that the Holy Spirit is faithful to convict them and turn them into true worshippers.”

To effect such conviction, the line-up for the event was hand-picked with artistes, who will not only minister through song, but are also encouraged to share their testimonies during their set.

“The experiences sometimes resonate with the listener. For example, there is the testimony of Kevin Downswell’s experience of hunger; or Prodigal Son – the street boy, gangster, homeless man whose life was radically changed by God; Carlene Davis – who overcame cancer; and Marion Hall, coming from an image of slackness to Christ and surviving abuse. The Bible says we overcome the enemy by the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony. That is what happens at Fun in the Son each year. People receive the truth that the God who loves us, the Christ who died for us, causes us to triumph, no matter who you are,” Cowan said, adding that there is no greater worship than a life submitted to Christ.

This year’s staging of the Jamaica Fun in the Son Gospel Fest will take place on July 14 at National Heroes Park.
