1967:promotions One of the largest

of men of the Jamaica Constabula­ry Force, ranging from corporals to senior superinten­dents coinciding with the centenary celebratio­ns of the force, is announced. Two hundred and eleven men are promoted to higher ranks. The police say this is the largest list of men promoted at one time in the 100 year history of the force.

1983:The cream of Jamaican drink and food products are on display in Canada for three weeks, at one of the largest consumer trade fairs in the world, the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE). Rumona, Tia Maria, Pickapeppa Sauce, D&G soft drinks, Ting, Twist, marmalade, ginger beer, jams, jellies, coffee, mango chutney and biscuits are all on show; products of eleven Jamaican firms are taking part in the giant exposition on 350 acres on Lake Ontario in downtown Toronto. Jamaica’s Trade Commission­er to Canada, Danny Powell, says it is the largest-ever input by Jamaica at the annual CNE fair, and these are the firms taking part – Wray & Nephew Ltd, Estate Industries Ltd, Desnoes & Geddes Ltd, Fletcher-Bowman Ltd, The Pickapeppa Co Ltd, Scott’s Preservers Ltd , Jamaica Citrus Growers Ltd, and Robert’s Products Ltd. Jamaica’s products are expected to attract wide interest because over 3 1/2 million people from many countries are expected to attend the CNE exposition before it ends on September 5, Powell says.

1990:Party’s The Jamaica Labour candidate to contest the by-election in the Braeton Division of St Catherine, on September 6, is Austin Mattis, a businessma­n.
