A faithful, committed servant of Jamaica
IT WAS with a feeling of deep sadness that I learnt of the passing of my mentor and friend, the Easton Douglas.
Jamaica has lost a faithful and committed servant who rose through the ranks of the civil service. He excelled and became permanent secretary; he was also minister in three ministries.
He served as guide to many senior civil servants and government ministers.
In his quest to give greater service to his country, he decided to become an active member of the People’s National Party and entered the cut and thrust of representational politics. Eventually, he won the seat of St. Andrew South East in the House of Representatives.
Given his training and educational background, he was naturally and particularly interested in matters affecting the built industry and the environment.
Most of his contribution to Jamaica’s development was therefore in the areas of infrastructure, physical and urban planning and housing, these could be equalled but never surpassed.
When it came to housing for the poor, he was diligent, articulate and passionate, and he always found a way to advance the interest of those who were landless by the reality of history.
I was pleased to appoint him as chairman of the far-reaching and powerful parastatal organisation, the National Housing Trust, a position in which he served with distinction for a number of years.
NATIONAL HONOUR
A grateful nation honoured him with the national award of Order of Jamaica for his faithful and distinguished service.
On a personal note, Easton Douglas believed in me and mentored me, particularly because of his vast experience in the public service.
He was chairman of my campaign team when I sought the leadership of the People’s National Party and we enjoyed an extremely close relationship.
I extend my deep condolences to his family and assure them that they are in my prayers. I will always be grateful to him.
His legacy and memory will be lasting, and his life of service to our nation remains a bright example to us and for generations to come. PORTIA SIMPSON MILLER
